Milk Run With June

January 10, 2008

I gathered up a few kids to go get milk Monday evening.  It was rainy and windy and getting really dark, so I turned on the radio and heard that there were at least 2 tornados in the area.

I am always up for an adventure and thought for a minute that it would be a fun drive out there in the bad weather.  If we did happen to get caught up in the storm I had the trusty portable propane heater with us and we all had jackets on… we would be fine.

A little voice in my head told me that I should call Katie and get her take on it.   So, I called.  She didn’t care if I went!  Now I am thinking to myself that she wants to live high on the hog with the proceeds of my life insurance policies.  hmm.  So I asked her again if she thought I should go, this time making sure that she knew there were like three tornados around us.  She knew I caught her and she changed her tune and told me to come home.

So, Tuesday morning I grabbed Junie and my camera and headed out to get the milk.

Here are some pictures from that morning.

 tree

Here is a nice tree we passed on the way.

fence

A good looking fence.

roadcurve

A curve in the road.

Since we were already out and about, I thought we should find out how high the water in the Finley River was.

finleydam

The water is normally a foot below the dam on the upstream side and a good ten feet below it on the downstream side.  That is the Ozark Mill in the background.

cabin2

It’s good to be prepared.

cabin

I was thinking of building all of our cabins on the hill… but cabins on stilts are cool too!  Would you stay in a cabin like this?  If the water was lower, of course.

oldwheel

Now that is cool!

I’m really glad you decided to go back on Tuesday instead. If you had left the kids at home we would have taken our chances. ;) Okay, not really. Great pics.

    Oh Jeffrey!!

Those are great pictures!!! I love that fence!! Going out during a Tornado watch could be exciting, and I could see you and I doing that, but few other people in the family are that adventuresome!! I always wanted to see a tornado, but from a mile or so away would be fine for me.

I had wondered about your land being so near the water if there would be flooding problems different times of the year. Have you gone there lately to see how the water levels are? I hope you got a good surveyor in the area to help with the planning of where to put the buildings.

I liked the “still life” of the old wheel too.

    I am enjoying you blog!!

I love the cabin! I would stay in one if the water was a smidge lower.
